Scent Aware School
Douglas Harkness is a scent aware school. We have students and adults who are sensitive to scents. Please avoid wearing strong scents when you visit the school.
New Teacher for Grade 2
We are excited to announce that we have interviewed and hired an additional grade 2 teacher. This means we will be shifting to three straight grade 1 classes and two straight grade 2 classes with fewer students in each room. The new teacher, who will be starting on October 16th. We have made adjustments to all of the current grade one/two class lists in order to balance numbers and student complexities as we move to straight grades. Parents can anticipate a letter coming home on Thursday next week to let them know who their child’s teacher will be. All five classrooms will continue to mix & mingle and work as a team each week to support the learning needs of all students.
Little Green Thumbs
We are thrilled to announce that we will be receiving three Little Green Thumbs Gardens for grades 4, 5, and 6 as well as two Little Sprouts Gardens for Kindergarten and Grade 1. These gardens focus on growing vegetables right inside the classroom. The Grade 2 and 3 classrooms will be focusing on growing Indigenous plants with the possibility of transplanting some of them outside to our outdoor learning space. You can learn more about the Little Green Thumbs program at www.littlegreenthumbs.org
Classroom Champions
The school has signed up for the Classroom Champions Program. This program pairs each classroom up with an Olympic or Paralympic athlete. The athlete will engage with students virtually throughout the school year with a focus on student agency, goal setting and belonging. You can learn more about the Classroom Champions program at www.classroomchampions.org
Calgary Hitmen Reading Program
We are very fortunate to have been selected to participate in the grade 2 and grade 3 Calgary Hitmen Reading Program. This will start in early November. Stay tuned for more information as it becomes available.
