Truth and Reconciliation
This Saturday is National Day For Truth and Reconciliation - originally Orange Shirt Day. As we continue our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation while embracing Indigenous ways of knowing as a school community, we encourage you to attend one of the many family events happening around Calgary this weekend.
Enrolment Update
On September 28 the Alberta Government conducted their student enrollment count. Our enrollment number on that date determines the funding that the school receives for the year. We were projected to welcome 310 students by this date but we ended the day with 322 students! Our current enrollment breakdown is as follows:
| K |
1 |
2 |
3 |
4 |
5 |
6 |
|
38 |
56 |
42 |
47 |
46 |
42 |
51 |
We currently have 2 classes at each grade level with the exception of Grades 1 and 2 who are currently combined into 4 classes with 24 and 25 students in each room.
New Teacher Coming Soon!
We are excited to report that with the September count complete, we have adequate numbers to interview and hire an additional Grade 2 teacher. This means we will be able to shift to three straight grade 1 classes and two straight grade 2 classes with fewer students in each room! We hope to have the new Grade 2 teacher on board by October 16 and will keep impacted families up to date as we move ahead. We understand that this will be an adjustment as classroom configurations shift, however all five rooms will continue to mix & mingle and work as a team to support the learning needs of all students.
Grade 4,5,6 Cross Country Meet Change of Plans
Unfortunately the cross country meet being hosted by Cecil Swanson school starts before our dismissal bell. This means that we will not be able to have our students attend as originally planned. The students have continued to train twice a week during running club and the teachers are planning a local event to celebrate their commitment to their training. Please watch for a letter home from the club with more information.
Mark Your Calendars! Our famous “Fall Back Into Literacy Family Night” is back!
In anticipation of the clocks changing, we will be welcoming families into the school for a fun night of literacy games, reading, and prizes on Thursday November 2nd from 5:00pm-6:30pm. Stay tuned for more information to come!
Diversity at DHS
Did you know that at DHS, diversity is our super power? In the Calgary Board of Education, diversity means the full range of uniqueness within humanity. Dimensions of diversity include, but are not limited to, race, religious beliefs, skin colour, gender,, physical disability, mental disability, age, ancestry, place of origin, marital status, source of income, sexual orientation, cultural and linguistic diversity family composition, gender identity/expression, physical attributes and socio-economic status. We would like to thank Education Matters for a $6600 grant to purchase picture books that celebrate all of these dimensions of diversity. Ms. Mah is busy preparing these carefully curated books so that all students and staff can see themselves represented in the texts in our learning commons.
We Need Your Help!
A message was sent during the week of September 4 regarding forms that families are REQUIRED to complete, review and/or update. You are receiving this message as a friendly reminder to complete these REQUIRED online forms by the end of next week.
To complete the forms you will need to log into your child’s MyCBE account. This is the same account that you use to pay fees, view report card information, book school conferences, etc. If you need assistance with completing these forms, please contact the school to schedule a time to come in and we will be happy to help.
Some of the forms you will see when you log in include:
- Demographic Verification - 2023-24 – This form needs to be completed each school year and includes your child’s personal information as well as parent / legal guardian contact information.
- Citizenship Information Update - 2023-24 – This form becomes available if you change your child’s citizenship information on the Demographic Verification form.
