Principal’s Message|
“Let’s make our circle strong.”
Saa’kokoto Randy Bottle, Kainai Elder
Next week, on September 30, we recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Orange Shirt Day. This day is an important opportunity to honour the children who never returned home from residential schools, Survivors, their families and Indigenous communities. It is also a time to reflect on the role we all have in Truth and Reconciliation.
At Douglas Harkness School, our commitment to Truth and Reconciliation is about more than one day. It is about the relationships we build, the stories and perspectives we learn from, and the ways we create a strong circle of belonging for everyone in our school community.
Throughout the year, students will continue to learn about First Nations, Métis and Inuit histories, cultures and perspectives. We will also continue to build relationships with one another and with the land through teachings of respect, reciprocity and responsibility, as well as practices such as sharing circles.
As we approach September 30, we invite families to talk together about what it means to make our circle stronger. How can we listen to one another, learn from one another and make sure everyone knows they belong?
Truth and Reconciliation is a journey we take together. Each opportunity to listen, learn, reflect and build relationships helps make our circle stronger.
In recognition of National Indigenous Peoples Day, and in alignment with the CBE Education Plan,
Douglas Harkness School
acknowledges and supports the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada’s (TRC) Calls to Action, and makes the following commitment to action for the 2026-2027 school year:
To learn and work with Indigenous Elders and Knowledge Keepers to deepen Indigenous students’ relationships to language, culture, community, and learning through songs, stories, and ceremonies shared according to local protocols.
To improve and create restorative circles structures and processes that facilitate positive conflict resolution for students.
