Principal’s Message
Say Cheese! Picture Day is Monday!
On Monday, it will be Picture Day at Douglas Harkness School! Our hallways will be full of smiles as students get ready to have their school pictures taken. It will be a special day to capture a memory from this school year.
Pictures are more than just memories. They can also help us learn! Pictures tell stories, help us notice new things and encourage us to ask questions.
Taking pictures is also a fun and easy way to learn at home. This weekend, try giving your child a camera or phone to take some pictures. Here are a few ideas:
- Alphabet Hunt: Take pictures of things that begin with different letters.
- My Favourite Things: Take pictures of favourite toys, places, people or activities.
- Picture Stories: Take a few pictures and use them to tell a story.
- Shape Hunt: Look for circles, squares and triangles around your home or neighbourhood.
- Nature Walk: Take pictures of trees, leaves, animals or other interesting things outside.
These simple activities help children practise speaking, asking questions, telling stories and being creative. Most importantly, they are a fun way to learn and spend time together as a family.
As we look forward to Picture Day on Monday, remember that every picture can tell a story. We can't wait to see all the wonderful smiles!
Get ready to say, "Cheese!"
Warm Regards,
Lisa and Michelle

Halloween at DHS|
Halloween is coming! On October 29, students at Douglas Harkness School will have a special day of learning. Classes may participate in fun Halloween or fall-themed learning activities. There will be no classroom parties.
We know that many families enjoy celebrating Halloween, while others do not. We respect all families and want every student to feel safe, welcome, and included at school.
Snacks and Treats
Please send a healthy snack for your child to enjoy.
Do not send treats or food to share with the class. We cannot share food because some students have food allergies.
Costumes and Pajamas
On October 29, students are welcome to wear a costume or pajamas to school if they wish. Dressing up is optional. Students may also wear their regular school clothes.
If your child chooses to wear a costume, please follow these guidelines:
- Comfort and safety: Choose a costume that allows your child to move, play, and learn safely. Students must be able to wear a coat and indoor and outdoor shoes.
- Safe movement: Avoid long capes, uncomfortable shoes, or anything that may cause your child to trip. Students will still participate in gym and outdoor activities.
- No masks: Students must be able to see clearly. Costume masks are not allowed.
- No extra costume items: Please leave costume accessories and props at home. These items can be lost or forgotten at school.
- No weapons: Toy swords, guns, or other costume weapons are not allowed.
- No scary or bloody costumes: We have young children at our school. Please choose costumes that will help everyone feel safe and comfortable.
We look forward to a fun day of learning together!
Digital Citizenship|
Digital Citizenship is having the knowledge, skills, and attitudes needed to demonstrate responsible and respectful behaviour when using technology or participating in digital environments. A digital citizen models these competencies: Respectful, Informed, Involved, Balanced, Safe, and Responsible.
All CBE Schools create and update Digital Citizenship Plans yearly. Our 2024-2025 digital citizenship plans are now posted on the school website here.
School Council|
Douglas Harkness is thankful to be supported by an AMAZING School Council. Thank you for their awesome Chip Fundraiser!
