Principal’s Message

“The best classroom is roofed only by the sky.”

~ Margaret McMillan

There is something special about spending time outside! Whether we are walking through fallen leaves, watching birds, playing with friends, or enjoying the fresh air, being outdoors gives us many opportunities to learn, explore, and grow.

On Wednesday, October 21, we will celebrate Take Me Outside Day! This day reminds us that learning does not always need to happen inside a classroom. The outdoors is a wonderful place for students to ask questions, make discoveries, and learn about the world around them.

Spending time outside has many benefits for children. It helps them feel happier and calm, build healthy bodies, focus and learn, be curious and creative and build friendships.

At Douglas Harkness School, we know that learning can happen anywhere. Our school grounds and community give students many opportunities to connect with nature, learn from the land, and build a sense of belonging.

As we celebrate Take Me Outside Day, we encourage families to spend a little extra time outdoors together. Take a walk, visit a park, notice the changing colours of the leaves, or simply enjoy some fresh air. Even a few minutes outside can make a difference!

This week, ask your child: What is your favourite thing to do outside? What new things can you discover together?

Let's celebrate the joy of learning, playing, and growing outdoors!

Warm Regards,

Lisa and Michelle

School Fees|

School and lunchroom fees have been added to your MyCBE account. Please log in to your account to see and pay these fees.

If you are unable to pay, your child will still be welcome at school. You can apply for a fee waiver through your MyCBE/PowerSchool account.

Picture Day|

Picture Day is coming! School Picture Day will take place on October 26. Come dressed to impress!

Halloween at DHS|

Halloween is coming! On October 31, students at Douglas Harkness School will have a special day of learning. Classes may participate in fun Halloween or fall-themed learning activities. There will be no classroom parties.

We know that many families enjoy celebrating Halloween, while others do not. We respect all families and want every student to feel safe, welcome, and included at school.

Snacks and Treats

Please send a healthy snack for your child to enjoy.

Do not send treats or food to share with the class. We cannot share food because some students have food allergies.

Costumes and Pajamas

On October 29, students are welcome to wear a costume or pajamas to school if they wish. Dressing up is optional. Students may also wear their regular school clothes.

If your child chooses to wear a costume, please follow these guidelines:

  • Comfort and safety: Choose a costume that allows your child to move, play, and learn safely. Students must be able to wear a coat and indoor and outdoor shoes.
  • Safe movement: Avoid long capes, uncomfortable shoes, or anything that may cause your child to trip. Students will still participate in gym and outdoor activities.
  • No masks: Students must be able to see clearly. Costume masks are not allowed.
  • No extra costume items: Please leave costume accessories and props at home. These items can be lost or forgotten at school.
  • No weapons: Toy swords, guns, or other costume weapons are not allowed.
  • No scary or bloody costumes: We have young children at our school. Please choose costumes that will help everyone feel safe and comfortable.

We look forward to a fun day of learning together!
