Principal’s Message

“We are all like snowflakes. Each one is different and beautiful in its own way.” ❄️

This week, we saw some of the first snowflakes falling outside our classroom windows! Students were excited to see the snow and have fun playing outside. The first snowfall brings many feelings. Some people love the snow and winter activities, while others are not ready for the cold weather!

Snow is also a reminder that winter is coming. It is time to bring out our warm jackets, winter boots, snow pants, hats and mittens. At Douglas Harkness School, students spend time outside every day to learn and play. Please make sure your child comes to school dressed for the weather. Students will usually go outside for recess when the temperature, including wind chill, is warmer than –20°C.

Winter weather can also make travelling to and from school more difficult. Snow and ice can make roads and sidewalks slippery. Please give yourself extra time when driving or walking to school. We also remind families to follow parking and traffic rules to help keep everyone safe.

Even though winter brings some challenges, it also brings many wonderful opportunities! Playing in the snow, building snowmen, going for winter walks and catching snowflakes are all fun ways to enjoy the outdoors.

As we welcome the first snow, we encourage families to find time to enjoy the beauty of winter together. Sometimes the simplest moments outside can create the best memories!

Warm Regards,

Lisa and Michelle

Winter Clothes|

Snow and cold weather are coming in the next few weeks. We ask that all students come to school dressed for the weather. Students go outside every day for learning and play, so it is important that they are warm and ready to be outdoors.

Please help your child dress in layers and bring winter clothing such as a warm jacket, mittens, a toque (winter hat), snow pants, and boots.

If your family needs winter clothing, the school can help. We have warm clothing available. Please fill out this form - Community Closet: Winter clothing request – Fill out form

School Fees|

School and lunchroom fees have been added to your MyCBE account. Please log in to your account to see and pay these fees.

If you are unable to pay, your child will still be welcome at school. You can apply for a fee waiver through your MyCBE/PowerSchool account.

School Council|

Douglas Harkness is thankful to be supported by an AMAZING School Council. If you would like to find out more information, please visit the school website. The next school council meeting will take place on Nov. 19.
