Staffing Updates
As we mentioned in an email to families on Sunday January 14 as well as at our school council meeting on January 18th, we have been interviewing to hire a teacher to fill the part time role of APPLE School Facilitator at Douglas Harkness.
In addition, we have recently received Learning Disruption funding from Alberta Education in order to hire a part time literacy and math intervention teacher. We have decided to combine these two part time roles into one full time teaching position.
Effective February 5th, Christina Cariolato (currently in Kindergarten) will be leaving the Kindergarten team to fulfill these two new roles in the school. Ms. Cariolato’s new role will allow her to work with ALL of the students at Douglas Harkness and we are excited for all students to benefit from her skills.
We would like to welcome Ms. Nicole Leteta to Douglas Harkness School. Ms. Leteta will be joining the Kindergarten team and will work closely with Ms. Bains to ensure a smooth transition for students and families. Welcome to Douglas Harkness Ms. Leteta! You have come to a great place!
Miss. Rita is Retiring!
Wednesday January 31 will be Miss. Rita’s last day of work at Douglas Harkness as she has decided that it is time to retire. She has worked hard as our Facility Operator, keeping our school clean and running, for many years. Miss. Rita will surely be missed but we know that she is excited to have some extra time to pamper herself doing all of the things that she loves. No more alarm clocks Miss. Rita!!!!! Congratulations!!!
Douglas Harkness Celebrated!
We are excited to share that Douglas Harkness School has been chosen as the highlight school for the upcoming January 30, CBE Board of Trustees meeting due to the quality literacy instruction taking place in our building. We are proud that our improved student achievement, emphasis on literacy learning environments, structures, processes such as Harkness Hour, and our actions taken to create a positive learning culture for students are being recognized.
Grade 4 Parent Survey
Alberta Education has mailed out this year’s Grade 4 Parent Assurance Survey. If your child is in grade 4 this year, please check your Canada Post mailbox for an envelope that contains information about how to complete the survey. The information gathered gives us valuable feedback on what we are doing well at Douglas Harkness and what we could improve on.
Flames Foundation APPLE School Launch
We will be holding a Flames Foundation APPLE School Launch assembly on Wednesday February 14th. Students are encouraged to wear red on this day or any Calgary Flames clothing that they might have. This assembly is for staff and students only. We cannot accommodate any parents/guardians at this assembly.
Family Math Night
We are holding our annual Family Math Night on Thursday February 22 from 5:00-6:30pm. Families are invited to join us in the school to play a variety of fun math games with their children. Please mark your calendars!
Casino
Mark your calendars for April 8 and 9 as we will need your support as a volunteer for our School Council/Parent Society Casino. Our last casino raised over $70,000 for the school that was used to purchase technology, supplies, and other equipment for the school. We will need 50+ volunteers to fill the spots so please reach out to family and friends for additional support. If you are able to volunteer for a shift, please email harknessparent@gmail.com to express your interest. Thank you so much for your help!!
