As we begin a new school year, we are excited for all the learning and experiences ahead. Each new year brings opportunities for students to learn, grow, explore, and build relationships. 

This year, we will continue to work together with our students, families, staff, and community. Our goal is to make Douglas Harkness School a welcoming, supportive, and safe place where every child feels they belong and can be successful. We look forward to beginning this new year together and seeing all that it will bring. 

Each week, we will send a weekly family update. It will include: 

• important dates and events 
• reminders for the weeks ahead 
• a short message from our leadership team 
• important school news and information 

We are excited to welcome our students back on August 31! To our returning students and families, welcome back! To our new students and families, welcome to Douglas Harkness School! We look forward to meeting you and helping you feel part of our school community. 

We hope this school year is filled with learning, friendship, joy, discovery, and fun. We are excited to begin this journey together!

Not Returning to Douglas Harkness| 

We know that changes and moves happen over the summer. If you have received this email and are no longer attending Douglas Harkness School, please email or call the office as soon as possible.   

School Hours|   

Monday - Thursday 8:40 AM – 3:15 PM 

Early Dismissal Fridays 8:40 AM – 12:35 PM 

Lunch 12:00 PM – 12:42 PM  

Homeroom Teachers and Class Assignments|  

By Friday afternoon, you will receive an email of introduction from your child’s classroom teacher. Please keep an eye on your email to ensure that you receive this information. 

Note: Class lists are subject to change due to enrolment.  

This information will be accompanied by the first day of school plans as well as which doors your child will be using to enter and exit the building. All staff will be outside on the first days for supervision and will be there to help direct you and your child.  Please plan to say goodbye to your child outside the school as parents will not be permitted to accompany children into the school.  

Communication| 

Open, continuous communication is of utmost importance throughout the school year. Staff will use the following methods to communicate learning and updates: 

SchoolMessenger – Please ensure you have subscribed to receive these  messages. Don’t miss out on school messages! To ensure you receive important information from your child’s school and the Calgary Board of Education, please subscribe to receive commercial electronic messages on school topics such as student fees, picture days, field trips, and fun lunches.

School Calendar – Please visit our school website for our school calendar. You will find calendars for Grades 1–6 as well as Kindergarten. 

School Supplies|  

All your child’s supplies will be distributed at school by their classroom teacher. The fee for school supplies will be uploaded to your MyCBE account by mid-October. 

What to Bring to School 

• A backpack  
• A personal, labelled water bottle 
• A packed lunch and snacks for throughout the day. 
• Running shoes to be used indoors and for Physical Education activities 
• Outdoor clothing — be prepared for changing weather throughout the day 

Please label all clothing, coats, and personal items
